What you’ll practice (based on the 2025 AHA/AAP pediatric guidelines)
- Infant choking: if a baby can’t cry, cough, or breathe, call 911. Then alternate 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object comes out or the baby becomes unresponsive. Abdominal thrusts aren’t used on infants.
- Child choking: the 2025 guidance uses 5 back blows alternating with 5 abdominal thrusts.
- Infant CPR: start with chest compressions. Use one hand or the two-thumb encircling technique, because the AHA dropped the old two-finger method. Give breaths along with compressions if you’re able.
- AED use for kids, with pediatric pads when available.
- Safe-at-home talk: pools, choking hazards, and when to call 911.
Reading isn’t enough. You’ll repeat each step on a manikin until it’s muscle memory.
