BLS vs. Heartsaver CPR — Which Do You Need?

Megan H., RN August 26, 2026 5 min read

BLS (Basic Life Support) and Heartsaver CPR are both American Heart Association courses, but they are designed for different people. Choosing the wrong one can waste time and money — or leave you without the credential your employer actually requires. Here is the straightforward breakdown.

The short answer

BLS for Healthcare Providers is the course you need if you work in a clinical, medical, or healthcare setting — nurses, EMTs, paramedics, dental staff, medical assistants, home health aides, and clinical students. It goes deeper into team-based resuscitation, bag-mask ventilation, and multi-rescuer scenarios.

Heartsaver CPR/AED is the course for everyone else — fitness professionals, teachers, childcare workers, office safety teams, parents, coaches, and anyone who wants to be prepared but does not work in a clinical role.

Both courses are AHA-certified, both include hands-on practice and a skills test, and both result in an official AHA eCard valid for two years.

What BLS covers

BLS stands for Basic Life Support. It is the standard required by hospitals, clinics, dental offices, EMS agencies, and nursing programs. The course covers:

A typical in-person BLS class runs about 1.5 hours. The pace is faster and assumes a baseline familiarity with medical settings.

What Heartsaver CPR/AED covers

Heartsaver is the AHA's flagship course for non-healthcare professionals. It covers:

The Heartsaver course runs about 2 hours and is taught at a pace that is comfortable for people without medical backgrounds. It is ideal for personal preparedness, workplace compliance, coaching certifications, and school or childcare requirements.

If you add First Aid, the combined Heartsaver CPR + First Aid course runs about 3 hours and covers bleeding, burns, allergic reactions, and other common emergencies.

How do I know which one my employer requires?

Ask your employer or HR department for the exact course title they accept. The most common breakdown:

If you are still unsure, a quick message to your employer with the question "Do I need BLS or Heartsaver?" will save you from taking the wrong class.

Can I take BLS even if I am not a healthcare worker?

Yes. BLS is open to anyone, and some people prefer it because it covers more advanced skills. However, if your job or program only requires Heartsaver, there is no advantage to choosing BLS — and BLS costs slightly less at most providers.
